With a time of 17:15.15 in the 5,000 meter run, Laney’s Evan Osias took home the Georgia High School Association Class AA cross country state championship Saturday at Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Georgia.

As impressive as his winning time was, it wasn’t even his best time of the season. Last Saturday during Class AA Sectionals, he clocked 16:57.99 in the same distance. Perhaps as an omen of greater things to come, Osias PR’d with a time of 16:52.62 during the Westside Speedway Invitational back on Aug. 24.

Saturday was Osias’ first state championship after winning several region crowns over the last two years, both in cross country and track and field.

In 2023, he won Region 4-AA titles in the 3200, 1600 and 800 meter runs. He took home first place during last year’s cross country region meet in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 17:13.30 and finished 14th in the 2023 Class AA state championship meet.

During the 2024 track and field season, Osias won first place at the Region 4-AA meet in the 3200, 1600 and 800 meter runs and clocked a fifth place finish in the Class AA track and field state championships back in May 2024 in the 1600 meter run.
