Last-minute shopper spends Christmas Eve in jail

Michael Johnson was arrested after allegedly becoming violent when the Evans Walmart wouldn't let him in Dec. 24 for last-minute shopping.

Date: December 28, 2022

Some men are known for waiting until the last minute to get Christmas gifts.

Michael Johnson, 36, paid the ultimate price when he waited too late and got upset when the Evans Walmart began to close on Christmas Eve, according to a sheriff’s report.

Managers stopped letting people inside at 8 p.m. Saturday, so Johnson began screaming and arguing with a manager. Things only went downhill from there, the report says.

A responding deputy approached Johnson and grabbed his hoodie to escort him from the front door. Johnson snatched away and told the officer not to touch him, so the deputy said he was under arrest for disorderly conduct.

From a sheriff’s report: “After several failed attempts to place him in handcuffs, I eventually planted my foot in front of him to place him off balance and forced him to the ground.  As I did so, an unknown friend of Michael’s, as well as his wife, began approaching me in an aggressive manner from behind. At that time, a concerned citizen, James Ware, approached me and placed his knee on the rear of Michael’s upper back/lower neck, helping me gain control of Michael.”

When several citizens surrounded them, James Ware “drew and displayed his firearm and began screaming for everyone to step back,” the report says.

Ware never pointed his firearm at anyone on scene, he just brandished it to prevent any further attacks, the deputy said in the report.

Johnson went to jail on Christmas Eve for disorderly conduct and obstruction of law enforcement officers.
