Le Chat Noir puts local artists’ spooky creations on display

Guests at Le Chat Noir on Friday night were able to view the work of over thirty local artists at the 8th annual October Spooktacular.

Date: October 19, 2024

Le Chat Noir, an intimately-sized theatre and bar in the heart of Augusta, welcomed members of the community – many wearing elaborate Halloween costumes – to an art reception on Friday featuring the works of over 30 local artists.

Art pieces are curated for The October Spooktacular annually by Heather Dunaway.

“The art reception draws in the artists and the patrons to be able to mingle and talk about the arts and what they love about artwork in general…it gives artists the opportunity to meet with people that will potentially buy their artwork,” she said.

This is the Spooktacular’s 8th run, and it gives visitors the opportunity to see Augustan artists’ interpretations of Halloween.

“Sometimes it’s like, blood and gore,” said Dunaway about the range of pieces. “And then sometimes, it’s like, a cute little lunar butterfly.

The October Spooktacular exhibit will remain on display until the second weekend in November.

Building a sense of community

One guest, Maddie Bell, came with friend Christina Thompson to see artwork by TJ McSherry, who they know. “I was expecting spooky stuff, and that’s what we got when we got here, so I’m happy with it so far,” said Bell.

Dakota Hancock sat outside after looking at artwork, where she said that she’s attended as many Le Chat events as she’s been able to for the past decade.

“I’m all about supporting local businesses, especially those that cater to more of a niche community like the art community and sometimes the LGBT community,” Hancock said. “It gives a sense of community to those who feel like they can’t always be seen.”

Upcoming events at Le Chat Noir

Le Chat is gearing up to host its yearly Black Cat Carnival on Oct. 26, starting at 8 p.m. This event includes games, food trucks, vendors and drinks. Costumes are encouraged.

The theatre also hosts regular events throughout the year including improv comedy shows.
