League of Women Voters to hold sign-waving on International Workers’ Day

The League of Women Voters of the CSRA will lead a sign-waving on International Workers' Day to advocate for workers' rights.

Date: April 29, 2025

On the first of May, the League of Women Voters of the CSRA (LWVCSRA) will be leading May Day for Democracy, a sign-waving event from 4-6 pm along the sidewalks in front of and adjacent to the Unitarian Universalist Church at 3501 Walton Way Ext.

According to Gayla Keesee, LWVCSRA co-president, May 1 is recognized as International Workers’ Day in many countries around the world, making it the ideal day for participants to support workers’ rights.

“International Workers’ Day is a day to honor the struggles and the victories and the rights of working people,” she said.

Keesee said that the event is a reaction to the current presidential administration’s “impact on workers” and DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency)

Voters’ rights

The May Day for Democracy event will not only be in support of fair wages and safe workspaces, but also is intended to call attention to voters’ rights. LWVCSRA will be kicking off Unite and Rise 8.5, an initiative to “register, educate and mobilize voters.”

Unite and Rise 8.5 gets its name from its goal to reach 8.5 million voters nationwide.

“We want to engage, we want to educate, we want to motivate them to get to the polls during this election season,” said Keesee.

A table will be set up at the event for people to check their voter registration status or register to vote. 50501 Augusta will also be coordinating a similar rally at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Union Hall, 1250 Reynolds St., at the same date and time.
