Letter to the editor: Misrepresentation in elections

Letters to the editor
Date: February 13, 2024

Dear Editor,

I do not live in Georgia House District 125, so I do not get campaign flyers for this special election.

At church this morning, I was approached by two separate groups of people. They said that they weren’t sure who to vote for in this election due to negative campaign flyers. I was told that Gary Richardson voted against removing inappropriate children’s books from county libraries. I realize campaigns routinely misrepresent issues, but this claim is outrageous. The purchase and placement of books is decided by the library staff and the library board, NOT by the County Commission.

This gross misrepresentation bothers me because Gary Richardson has been my county commissioner for the past eight years. He has represented the third commission district well. He has been one of the most accessible elected representatives we have had. I lost count of how many times I contacted him during his time on County Commission on various issues. Gary always responded within hours. If he did not know the answer, he acknowledged that he received my email/text, and followed up with comprehensive answers within a couple of days.

Gary is a humble man who is thoughtful in assessing any issue before he votes. I encourage eligible voters to elect a proven public servant, Gary Richardson, to represent House District 125 and Columbia County in the Georgia General Assembly.
