Dear Editor,

House Bill 581, which the Georgia General Assembly and Georgia voters approved in 2024, promised some property tax relief for homeowners – unless local governments decide to “opt out.”

Former Mayor Bob Young responded to an article on the subject in the Augusta Press saying,” 62% of the voters in Augusta support the assessment freeze. It would be foolish for the City or the School Board to opt out.”

You can get a feel for what the city commissioners and school board trustees intend to do by attending the publichearings (required by law) they propose to hold to get “your input.”

And Columbia County citizens will be given the same opportunity when their county commissioners and trustees take up the issue shortly.

I urge property owners to attend those hearings, listen and make your opinions known.
