Improper assignment accidentally sent to Evans Middle students

Date: February 10, 2023

On Friday, Feb. 10, Evans Middle School sent out a letter to all parents notifying them of an inappropriate assignment that was mistakenly linked via Google Classroom on Feb. 9.

“It was discovered that a hyperlink mistakenly routed to an improper assignment that was never intended for students,” said the letter from Evans Middle Principal Juliet King. “The assignment was briefly posted in the school’s Google classroom, which all students have access to; however, the assignment was only intended for 150 students, to whom the incorrect link was sent directly. It was posted for less than 24 hours before being removed early this morning immediately after the error was discovered.”

Below are screenshots of the improper assignment:

The school district stated the assignment was not an adopted instructional resource, nor is it the subject matter included within the curriculum at Evans Middle School or any other Columbia County schools.

“The intention of the assignment was to include vetted scenarios related to teaching and supporting positive student behavior, and unfortunately, the wrong content was linked,” the press release said.

King said the school sincerely regrets the error, and apologizes for any harm the situation may have caused to families.

“Our staff is working to address the issue and establish processes to help prevent this from happening in the future,” said King. “We want to work together to continue to provide a safe and positive learning environment for our students and staff.”

Superintendent Steven Flynt said the assignment was not intended to target content or members of the LGBTQIA+ community, as some of the included material also dealt with scenarios centered around mishandling medication and drugs.

“LGBTQ material is not in any of our curriculum,” he said.
