Though closed through the New Year’s weekend, Columbia County libraries will be open up by getting the jump on offering several activities to kickstart 2022 creatively.

Before kids return to school on Jan. 4, they’ll could try mentally adjusting from the holiday break by brushing up on their interactive learning at the Young Makers, a Makerspace program, at the Columbia County Library in Evans, according to the PINES Library System calendar.

A “makerspace” is a do-it-yourself workshop space, usually in schools or libraries, that supply materials and equipment to learn and explore various skills. These activities are often science, technology, engineering and math related, and can range from high-tech skills such as computer coding to more “low-tech” skills like sewing.

The Young Makers program, starting Jan. 3, is aimed at educating children ages eight to 12 “about science, engineering and design with hands-on experiences,” says the library calendar’s description.

While some will go to Classroom D for Young Makers, that same day students ages 11 to 18 can stop by the teen fiction section to pick up a teen take and make kit, a to-go set of arts and craft items curated together for a specific project—in this case, hand-warmers.

That week, after school has started back up, teens can go back to Classroom D on Jan. 6 and earn volunteer credit by participating in the Teen Advisory Board, helping the library decide what programs to offer for the year and prepare the February book display.

Adults will also have some opportunities to keep themselves occupied later in the month. On Jan. 10, the library will host the Pub Fiction Book Club, according to an event page posted by the Columbia County Library. Reading enthusiasts can gather and discuss a novel of the month. Though the monthly event will be held by the library, the book club will meet at Pizza Central restaurant in Evans.

Amid all of this, those looking to finish off the holiday season with some ice skating will have an opportunity to do so, as Evans on Ice recently announced on its Facebook page that, because mechanical difficulties with its ice rink forced the attraction to close for several days, it will reopen for a bonus weekend, Jan. 7 – 8.
