“Who’s Afraid of Opera,” “Use Your PC More Effectively,” “Learning to Use Your iPad/iPhone,” “100 Things to Do in Augusta Before You Die,” “Aiken: The Other Holy City” and “The Wolf Among Us: An Up-To-Date Look at Man’s Best Friend” are just a few of the fall offerings at the newly-formed Center for Lifelong Learning at the University of South Carolina Aiken.
An in-person open house and registration will be from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 17 in the university’s business and education building, room 134.

“The Center for Lifelong Learning has sort of been around for years,” said Michael St. John, the assistant director of external programs at USC Aiken.
The center brings together two existing programs – McGrath Computer Learning Center and the Academy for Lifelong Learning – under one banner.
As the name implies the McGrath Computer Learning Center offered technology-related classes while the Academy for Lifelong Learning offered more general types of classes.
The two programs were more community-based and as time passed, they fell more and more under the university’s umbrella. Marrying the two and giving it a new name made sense, St. John said.

“Combining the two programs has allowed for better use of shared resources and capabilities and a wider variety of classes and enrichment opportunities. In conjunction with USC Aiken, the Center for Lifelong Learning seeks to provide structured and informal continuing education opportunities to adults in the CSRA,” said a news release.
St. John said the classes fall into those distinct categories of technology and general study.
Some classes may only meet for one session while others meet up to four times, he said.
The fall schedule offers 45 different courses.

Online registration is available for the center, but St. John said some students prefer to learn more in an in-person setting. They may be uncomfortable with technology, which is one of the reasons they are signing up for the center in the first place while others simply want to meet people.
A membership into the Center For Lifelong Learning is $35 with individual classes fees ranging from $5 to $22. All classes are held in person at the USC Aiken campus.
