Lively Letters: The Tree of Liberty….

Doug Lively

Date: July 13, 2025

On the heels of celebrating Independence Day, I feel a movement growing in America. A movement fueled by a dynamic, if not bombastic, leader after four years of a milquetoast, tepid ghostwriter of an administration. A leader whose loss in 2020 still is questionable to any rational person, democrat or Republican. A president who came within fractions of an inch of death by an assassin’s bullet.

We moved further left during the Biden administration than this old fart has ever seen, even including the Vietnam era. And 47 must yank the reigns to the right enough to make the horse rare-up on her haunches to right the course, to get America closer to the right path.

I sense each side (that sounds unbelievable by itself) is growing more and more resolute in our stance, our beleif, and therefore what we are willing to do to defend such.

In this environment, I would never challenge a person wearing apparel with “I Can’t Breathe” or “Black Lives Matter” or an “86 47” shell formation on the beach. I expect those with differing opinions to respect my choice of apparel to show my allegiance, nor do I expect any challenge.

Freedom of Speech and Assembly

One of the rights afforded to Americans in the First Amendment of our Constitution is the right to peaceably assemble and protest.

With these tumultuous times and protests which quickly turn from peaceful to riots, I suspect many are ready and prepared for the following expression of their rights, and hope they never need to exercise them.

To our active protesters:

If you are a protester, please avoid interfering with people’s travel. Both the ninth and fourteenth Amendments have been ruled to guarantee an individual’s freedom to travel. If a person or their family are in danger and in fear for their lives by a protesting crowd in a vehicle and the only way they see to escape danger is to accelerate to leave the danger, be prepared for them to do so. If that means running over people, Men, women…. None are exempt. I personally will not wait on an ambulance after being dragged out of my car and pummeled (search Reginald Denny) but will plead my case before a jury of my peers.

The law allows us to do that with impunity if we are in fear for our lives or our family’s life. We may call 911 either before (if time allows) or after for an ambulance to attend to the injured. Then there is the possibility they may also sue your insurance company for any damage to property. They will have your information from the ambulance ride!

To my good American friends:

If people are traveling in a car, pay attention to large crowds gathered around intersections, public parks, city hall, etc. Upon recognizing the crowd, if you can take 90 degree turns until you are out of the traffic buildup.

Be prepared to abandon your vehicle IF the unrest comes to you. If you do abandon a vehicle, seek shelter indoors, and move two rooms in to avoid glass breaking.

And shame on you if you aren’t exercising your Second Amendment right. May I suggest looking into non-lethal self defense.

Back to active protesters:

It is NOT worth anyone dying to prove a point by placing people and their families in fear of their lives. I can promise you the probability of the right being more prepared than the Anti-Semites and revolters is pretty high. I also suspect (and it has been proven) that big money disrupters are being paid to protest, on both sides just to foment the fervor and fever of divisiveness.

This is no longer a cute or political game for many peaceful conservative people. This has become “Don’t Tread On Me”. Many have reached the end of their tolerance mark and, if you choose to accost or assault because of some political cause, most will respond to protect their Life, Liberty, and pursuit of Happiness.

Americans are tired, and I believe they will no longer shelter in place nor cower to oppression. I also think there is a silent majority nearby who are ready and prepared mentally to come to the aid of the helpless, the unprepared, and the victims of assault and oppression.

Let’s not let manipulative powers who would have pallets of bricks delivered for assaulting Law Enforcement pull our strings like Marionettes.

Just reading the tea leaves, counting MAGA hats, and making it be known.

If you are predisposed to abuse or disruptively protest, Consider yourself warned. Both Left and Right.

God Bless America, Americans and
God Bless our way of life.

The Author

A product of Richmond County and lifelong Augustan, Doug Lively appreciates the value of the written word and how it marks thoughts, ideas, history and opinion for posterity. Words matter. The spoken word can be laced with inflection and expression to nuance meaning but the written word requires work to precisely relay a thought, idea or opinion. It is an art in danger of extinction.
