Three local Juliette Girl Scout recently received some presidential recognition.
Madison Cameron, Amani Wilson and Chandler Tucker all received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.Cameron and Wilson received the gold award, while Tucker received the bronze award. All three are Girl Scout Juliettes, which is a Girl Scout who is not part of a troop, but instead works on Girl Scout programs with an adult mentor.
The Presidential Service Award was created in 2003 to recognize the important role volunteers play in the community.
“This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action, too,” according to the President’s Volunteer Service Award website.

Cameron, a 5th grader at Cedar Ridge Elementary School, received the gold award, but this wasn’t her first time receiving the Presidential Service Award. Last year Cameron, along with Wilson, received the silver award. She said it felt good to receive the award for her volunteer work, which included feeding the homeless and picking up trash. Cameron was receiving the award for the second time, with her receiving the silver award last year and gold one this year.
“I like helping people,” Cameron said of what she likes about volunteering.
For Tucker, a 3rd grader at Lewiston Elementary, she said it felt “joyful” to get the award, and she was excited about it. Some of her volunteer work included picking up trash and helped with a church food drive. As for what she likes about being a Juliette, it’s working with other Juliettes.
A 6th grader at Evans Middle School, Wilson said she was surprised to get the award.
“It was exciting,” Wilson said.
Wilson did several types of volunteering, including helping the homeless and making Easter baskets out of laundry baskets and pool noodles that were wrapped with ribbon. The baskets were given out to less fortunate kids.
To be eligible for either the bronze, silver or gold awards, kids must complete a certain number of depending on their age and complete the service hours within a 12-month period. Wilson completed 110 hours, Cameron completed 80 hours and Tucker completed 26 hours.
