A man wanted for the statutory rape of a 14-year-old Augusta girl in March has finally been arrested following a second alleged sexual assault on a juvenile over the weekend, according to authorities.

Cameron Roberson, 20, was accused of raping a 16-year-old girl early Sunday morning at a party in Augusta. The victim told deputies she had been asleep on a couch at her boyfriend’s house when Roberson allegedly initiated sexual activity. Believing it was her boyfriend, the teen did not resist. She realized it was Roberson only after the act ended and she turned to see his face. She said she didn’t realize others at the gathering had gone to get food and left her alone with Roberson.

Authorities say Roberson hid behind the couch after the assault. The victim began screaming and quickly alerted her mother and brother, who were near the residence. Roberson fled the home after the mother confronted him and told him she was calling the cops.

Deputies responded to the scene and conducted a search, eventually locating Roberson about a mile away, hiding inside a portable toilet near Deans Bridge Road and the Advance Auto Parts store.

At the time of the rape, he was wanted on a felony warrant for statutory rape. In March, the mother of a 14-year-old girl discovered text messages suggesting her daughter had a sexual relationship with Roberson. Law enforcement issued a warrant for his arrest on a statutory rape charge, but he had not been located until the weekend incident.

In December, he was arrested for allegedly stealing a 2021 Chevrolet Malibu from a woman and leading Richmond County deputies on a chase. At the time, he was listed as homeless. He faced multiple charges, including two felonies, theft by receiving stolen property and fleeing police. He was also charged with reckless driving, obstruction, and driving without a license. He was later released on bond.

Roberson, whose last known address is in Waynesboro, is also facing several pending felony charges in Burke County, including burglary, credit card theft, and criminal attempted felony. He had a calendar call on Friday in Waynesboro, but it’s not clear if he made it.

Following his Sunday arrest, Roberson was charged with rape, possession of a weapon during a crime, and was served a bench warrant from Superior Court. Authorities also officially served him with the previous statutory rape warrant. He is being held without bond at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
