On Sunday morning, locals came out to Riverview Church in Evans to support Scouts BSA (formerly known as Boy Scouts of America).
Troop 1686, a local girls troop, held a fundraising pancake breakfast to earn money for their upcoming summer trip to Camp Ho Non Wah on the shores of South Carolina’s Bohicket Creek.
Troop 1686 is a result of a Scouts BSA rebrand in 2019, which granted girls ages 11-17 official entry into the organization. Girls were welcomed into the Cub Scouts the year before, in 2018.

Building skills, working toward camp
The girls of Troop 1686 steadily worked to make and serve pancakes on Sunday in Riverview’s Fellowship Hall.
Assistant Scoutmaster Ginger Hasek said that watching them in action was “a beautiful thing.”
“They’re learning team building, they’re learning confidence, they’re learning everyday skills,” Hasek added.
Troop 1686 Scoutmaster Christian Wamsley said that the typical summer camp cost averages around $350-$400 per scout, but is worth it for the cost.

“Summer camp is a weeklong thing where [scouts] get badges, rank advancements,” he said.
“The goal for them going there is to reach that rank of Eagle that they’d all like to get,” he said.

Scout Sunday
Breakfast that morning was a precursor to Scout Sunday, when Troop 1686 enjoyed and participated in a Riverview church service.
Riverview Church sponsors three local Scouts BSA groups, including Troop 1686, Troop 119 and Cub Scouts Pack 686.
During the service, scouts recited the Scout Oath and read passages from scripture.
