Loud noise at Augusta Mall mistaken for gunfire, causing some shoppers to run

Date: October 19, 2025

A large law enforcement response was dispatched to the Augusta Mall around 7 p.m. Saturday after multiple 911 calls reported possible gunshots, but it turned out to be a loud noise from a falling display.

Deputies determined there was no shooting or fight. According to officials, a display on the lower level near LensCrafters fell over, causing a table to topple and create several loud bangs.

The noise startled shoppers and led to confusion as people began running. Deputies arrived within minutes and confirmed that nothing criminal had occurred.

The incident comes just weeks after a fight inside the mall escalated into gunfire, leaving 17-year-old Devon McClain dead and sending shoppers fleeing for safety. A 16-year-old boy was charged with murder in the Sept. 23 shooting that was captured on video by witnesses and mall surveillance cameras.
