Luck runs out for Irish against Harlem

The Harlem Bulldogs defeated the Aquinas Fightin’ Irish in a close-fought battle on Friday night at Aquinas High School.

For the first touchdown of the night, Aquinas quarterback Jim Franklin completed a 15-yard pass to Kevin Douglas. The kick was no good, so the score was 6-0.

Before the end of the first quarter, Harlem quarterback Ryan Newman threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Jon Jon Howard. The kick was no good tying the score at 6-6.

The Bulldogs’ Jason Williams rushed for a 15-yard touchdown with eight minutes left in the second quarter. Simon Bradford made the extra point to push the Bulldogs ahead 13-6.

With less than a minute left in the second quarter, Franklin completed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Clark Jackson for the Fightin’ Irish. Jack Rhodes’ kick was good, and the score was 13-13.

Williams rushed a 3-yard Harlem touchdown with five minutes left in the third quarter. The kick was no good, so the score was 19-13.

Just a few minutes into the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs scored again on Newman’s 28-yard pass to Keundris Williams. Harlem rushed for the two-point conversion to make the score 27-13.

With just two minutes to go, Franklin completed another Aquinas touchdown pass for 7-yards to Jackson. Rhodes’ kick was good, and the score was 27-20.

In an attempt to gain the opportunity for another touchdown, Aquinas recovered an onside kick but couldn’t make anything happen out of the play.

Aquinas will host Greenbrier on Friday, September 23. Harlem will have next Friday off and host Cross Creek on Friday, September 30.
