‘Sordid Lives’ set to kick off fall theater season

The Main Street Players, a creative arts microcosm of the Edgefield County Historical Society (ECHS), is set to launch their fall season with a production of the 1996 comedy play, “Sordid Lives.” The show follows a Texas family as they grapple with the aftermath of a scandalous tragedy, “blending wit, warmth, and southern quirks,” per ECHS Publications Director James Folker.

“Sordid Lives” opens on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Discovery Center in downtown Edgefield.

Impact on Edgefield

A portion of the proceeds from “Sordid Lives” will be donated to the Edgefield County Historical Society, which utilizes these funds to purchase historical markers and properties, furthering their mission to preserve and promote the rich history of Edgefield County.

About the show

“The show itself is absolutely hysterical,” said Dustin Turner, marketing director for the Main Street Players. “it’s about this dysfunctional family coming together for a funeral…you’re going to laugh from the opening scene to the very end of the show.”

“Mixed into that is just a real message of acceptance,” Turner added. “It’s very meaningful.”

Turner will portray the character “G.W.” in “Sordid Lives” – a less-than-amiable Vietnam veteran who has been unfaithful to his wife. “He’s kind of a jerk,” said Turner. “But he, like all the other characters in this show, is very real…these are just real characters.”
