Authorities are investigating after firefighters discovered a body inside a burned home in Aiken County on Thursday morning.
Coroner Darryl Ables said officials responded around 9:58 a.m. to a report of a house fire with a possible fatality in the 600 block of Sawyer Road near Castle Rock Road in Monetta.
Fire crews from the Monetta Fire Department extinguished the blaze and found a male victim inside the residence. Due to extensive thermal injuries, the victim has not yet been identified. An autopsy is scheduled for next week in Newberry to determine the cause of death and assist in confirming the victim’s identity.
The Coroner’s Office, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, and South Carolina State Fire Marshal’s Office are jointly investigating the incident. The origin of the fire remains under investigation.
