A Martinez man was arrested and charged with reckless conduct after firing a gun in his apartment building July 8.
Jael Rockbrand, 33, of Cedar Lane, claims he didn’t know the gun was loaded and didn’t mean to fire the weapon when he shot through his floor and into the apartment below, according to a report from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
His downstairs’ neighbor called deputies when the bullet came through the ceiling. Deputies “noticed a hole above her dining room table,” according to the report.
When they went upstairs, they knocked on the door and identified themselves as deputies, the report said. Rockbrand opened the door only to attempt to close it on the deputies.
“I then kicked the front door open due to there being a weapon in the residence and a shot being fired through the floor,” wrote Deputy M.C. “Pat” Coule in his report.
Coule noted that Rockbrand smelled like alcohol and a “leafy green substance” was found in Rockbrand’s apartment. He found the hole in the floor as well as a shell casing.
He was taken to the Columbia County Detention Center.
