Georgia House of Representative Mark Newton was recently named as Legislator of the Year by Georgia Bio.

Georgia Bio is a life sciences membership organization that advocates for the division and varied pipeline. Newton, who is the District 127 representative, said he’s proud to represent the citizens of Columbia County and Augusta, including those who are in manufacturing, cyber education, military and healthcare.

“Our area plays a crucial and vital role in healthcare delivery and education for 11 million citizens across Georgia,” Newton said of the honor. “That’s why I appreciate the encouragement from such a strong organization as Georgia Bio. Through legislation on PBM’s to lower patient prescription prices, improving healthcare availability through CON licensing reform, or expanding health insurance access through Georgia Pathways, we remain laser-focused on healthcare policies that secure Georgians’ access and affordability for excellent healthcare.”

The 2024 Golden Helix award winners, including Newton, will be honored during the opening reception of the Georgia Life Sciences Summit on Oct. 21. According to a press release from Georgia Bio, the Golden Helix celebrates the achievements of leaders working to help the life science industry grow.

“The life sciences community strives to improve patients’ lives, reduce our environmental footprint, use less and cleaner energy, and support workforce development, all while growing Georgia’s bioeconomy” said Georgia Bio CEO Maria Thacker Goethe. “The Golden Helix Awards highlights those lasting contributions made by many in the life sciences sector in Georgia.”

According to the press release, Newton was chosen due to his sponsorship of House Bill 343 in 2023 and overall work for patients in Georgia.
