Augusta Mayor Hardie Davis Jr. appeared at the Oct. 10 North Augusta work study session to present North Augusta Mayor Briton Williams with the “Mayor’s Cup” for the most volunteers recruited for the second annual “Trash Bash.”

The event this year occurred on Sept. 17 where volunteers from both sides of the river came together to pick up trash along the Savannah River Ccrridor.

The event was coordinated by Keep Aiken County Beautiful and Keep Augusta Beautiful.

North Augusta had more than 150 volunteers to Augusta’s 61, making North Augusta the winning city, meaning Davis had to surrender the Mayor’s Cup to Williams. Augusta won the award last year.

In conceding defeat, Davis, who leaves office in January, but vowed Augusta will rally back next year.

Augusta Mayor Hardie Davis Jr. gives North Augusta Mayor Briton Williams the Mayor’s Cup Monday.

“In 2023, I anticipate the incoming mayor who will succeed me will roll up his sleeves, get involved and get the citizens out so we can retrieve the trophy and bring it back again,” Davis said.

Williams accepted the trophy and said that, in reality, both communities were winners in maintaining the area’s most important resources.

“The real winner here is the Savannah River,” he said.
