Mayor’s office responds to questions about secretive trip to Qatar

The Mayor’s Office has provided an eight-page document that details Mayor Hardie Davis Jr.’s recent trip to Qatar. 

The document is in response to to multiple requests for information about the Davis’s trip to Qatar earlier in December.

The Augusta Press sent seven questions to Davis’s office on Tuesday, Dec 7. Those questions were:


1.) Can you confirm that the mayor was in Qatar last week?

2.) What was the agenda?

3.) What was his goal and purpose?

4.) How will that trip benefit Augusta?

5.) How much did the trip cost?

6.) How was the trip funded/paid for?

7.) Is there anything else you would like us to share, any other information or a statement you would like to make about this trip?

The document states that no city funds were used related to the trip; however, Davis did not respond to questions on who or which organization funded the trip. 

“The purpose of the visit was to learn, exchange information and best practices, and continue the advancement of the United States and Qatar partnership,” according to the document.

Five main topics were on the itinerary, according to the document:

  1. The environment and climate change 
  2. Economics to include free zones and the Qatar Investment Authority 
  3. A visit with the Ministry of Municipality, which oversees urban planning and strategy, and management of public lands and Qatar’s agricultural sector 
  4. A visit to the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development 
  5. A visit to the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. overseas airbase 

The document stated that the trip benefits Augusta’s residents by examining best practices for a sustainable future as well as that investment in Augusta by Qatar is not out of the realm of possibility.
