Years of waiting ended Saturday with the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission selecting the businesses that will grow marijuana and manufacture low-THC oil.
The commission awarded two Class 1 licenses and four Class 2 licenses.
A Class 1 license allows the businesses to grow an indoor crop in space up to 100,000 square feet. The Class 2 license authorizes an indoor crop occupying up to 50,000 square feet.

The journey began in 2015 when then-Gov. Nathan Deal signed legislation allowing qualified patients to possess oil extracts with no more than 5% THC. However, that law failed to create a way for patients to get products from a provider in Georgia.
In 2019, the state legislature passed, and Gov. Brian Kemp signed, legislation creating the commission that would oversee licensing of businesses that would grow marijuana and manufacture and dispense the low-THC oil.

Approximately 70 businesses applied for the six licenses that were awarded. About 15,000 Georgians are eligible to receive the low-THC oil for one of 17 conditions or diseases including cancer, seizure disorders, Parkinson’s Disease and PTSD.
The Jefferson County Development Authority is referring requests for more information to TheraTrue.
