Mexican restaurant almost fails health inspection

The health inspection world grades a score below 70 as failing, however, no restaurants, pools or hotels received a failing score from inspections on May 12-16.

Worst scores in this week’s health inspection

This week’s lowest health inspection score was a 72 earned by the Restaurante Guatemalteco Dos Hermanos, located at 2906 Peach Orchard Road, in Augusta.

During the inspection, the inspector noted observing a lack of proper handwashing equipment, which resulted in a four point deduction

“Observed no hand drying provisions at the handwashing sink,” the report stated. “Ensure paper towels are restocked at each handwashing sink.”

The inspector also noted witnessing food being improperly stored, resulting in a nine point reduction.

“Observed sliced lettuce and sliced cabbage not being held at 41 [degrees Fahrenheit] or below,” the report stated. “Sliced leafy greens need to be kept at 41 [degrees Fahrenheit] or below.”

The inspector also deducted another four points from the health score for noticing foods missing proper labeling.

“Observed [time control for safety] items in walk in cooler without prep and discard dates,” the report stated. “Food not in original containers needs a prep and discard date.”

The inspector also deducted four points for seeing food improperly.

“Observed potatoes stored on floor of walk in cooler,” the report stated. “All containers that have food need to be kept at least six inches off the floor.”

Lastly, the inspector noticed food not being stored in a safe manner, which resulted in another four points being deducted.

“Observed items in dry storage, walk in cooler and prep top cooler not covered,” the report stated. “Store food 6 inches or above from the floor.”

The second lowest score of the week was a 75 given to Baymont Inn and Suites, located at 629 NW Frontage Road, in Augusta.

The inspector noted observing a lack of proper cleaning substances in the kitchen, which resulted in a four point reduction.

“Sanitizer dispenser supply empty at time of inspection,” the report stated. “Use alternate sanitizer (with proper test strips) (Using quat sanitizer, advised that bleach can be used at tested proper concentration; bleach on hand in kitchen).”

During the inspection, the inspector deducted nine more points for noticing food being improperly stored.

“Observed milk at 55 [degrees Fahrenheit] in self-serve cooler,” the report stated. “Discard [temperature control for safety] foods. Do not use cooler until able to maintain food at 41 [degrees Fahrenheit] or below.”

For additional improper practices in food storage, the establishment lost another four points.

“Need accurate thermometers located in warmest part of refrigerators in order to properly monitor temperatures (also advise having probe thermometer to test actual food temperatures),” the report stated. “Store all food and supplies [six inches] from floor on approved shelves.”

Following the Baymont Inn and Suites, the third lowest score of the week was an 82 given to Korean Food Express, located at 2857 Tobacco Road, Unit 6, in Hephzibah.

Throughout the inspection, the inspector reported observing food being improperly stored, which caused a nine point reduction.

“Observed [temperature control for safety] food in [cooler] not being held at 41 [degrees Fahrenheit] or below,” the report stated. 

Throughout the inspection, the inspector also reported observing a lack of labeling on prepped food items and marked another four points off the inspection score.

“Observed [temperature control for safety] food in [cooler] that need prep and discard dates,” the report stated. “Food that is prepped needs prep and discard dates on the containers.”

The inspector also deducted a point from the health score for finding unclean surfaces in the establishment’s kitchen.

“Observed mold like substance on the floor and walls of reach in cooler,” the report stated. “Clean floors and walls of reach in cooler.”
