The Columbia County Management and Internal Services Committee will discuss appointments to the newly created Columbia County Library System.

The five initial board members being recommended are and their length of term is:

  • Connie Melear, Countywide, Dec. 31, 2026 (Melear is currently the District 1 Commissioner)
  • John Luton, District 1 Dec. 31, 2026 (Luton is currently the Community Services division director)
  • Vacant, District 2, Dec. 31, 2028
  • Secelia Brown, District 3, Dec. 31, 2028
  • Windy Bedingfield, District 4, Dec. 31, 2026

According to the agenda document, the District 2 appointee will remain vacant until that seat is filled in the Nov. 4 special election. The document also stated that after the initial terms expire, all other terms will be for four years and commissioners may reappoint members for additional four-year terms.

These appointments come after the Columbia County Board of Commissioners voted in May to leave the Greater Clarks Hill Regional Library System and create a single county system with the Columbia County Regional Library System. Following the creation of the new system, the county approved dissolving the previous library advisory board.

The creation of the new system will be effective Jan. 1, 2026.
