Mod Pizza and Blimpie store food improperly noted health inspectors

The health inspection world grades a score below 70 as failing, however, no restaurants received were rewarded with a failing score from inspections on Oct. 28 – Nov. 1.

Worst scores in this week’s health inspection

This week’s lowest health inspection score was a 83 earned by Mod Pizza in the Augusta Exchange, located at 229 Robert C Daniel Parkway, Suite B, in Augusta.

The inspector noted seeing foods stored at the wrong temperatures, which resulted in a nine point reduction.

“Observed tomatoes –45 degrees Farenheit, cheese at –47 degrees Farenheit, chicken –46 degrees  Farenheit and sausage –43 cold degrees Farenheit above the walk-in-cooler and prep coolers,” the report stated. “Person-in-charge stated tomatoes were prepped the day before and the cheese is moved from cooler to cooler.”

The inspector also witnessed bugs in the dish washing area, which resulted in a three point reduction for the establishment’s final score.

“Observed flies and gnats in the dish washing area,” the report stated.

Following the Mod Pizza, the second lowest score of the week was an 84 given to Circle K/Blimpie, located at 602 Scott Nixon Memorial Drive, in Evans.

The inspector reported observing foods being stored at an improper temperature, which resulted in a nine point reduction.

“Observed tomatoes stored at –44/45 degrees Fahrenheit, and lettuce –44 degrees Fahrenheit cold held above 41 Fahrenheit,” the report stated. “Adjust thermostat and monitor temperatures to ensure cold held foods can be kept at 41 Fahrenheit or below.”

The third lowest score of the week was a score of 86 given to the Cajun Operating Company/Church’s Chicken, located at 2701 Peach Orchard Road, Augusta.

From the inspection, the inspector docked points for noticing build up in the ice machine.

“Observed build up in ice maker,” the report stated. 

In addition, the inspector noted an employee not wearing proper gear for food preparation.

“Observed employee only wearing one glove while preparing ready to eat foods,” the report stated.
