Talent on display from kindergarten to 12th grade

“We get a chance to exhibit art from kindergarteners all the way through 12th grade, so people can see that progression of talent,” said Courtney Owen, the lead art teacher in the school district.  “We just get to show off our kids’ work after they’ve been working so hard all year.”

The exhibit features a wide variety of artwork, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, and mixed media pieces.

“It’s amazing,” said Owen about the pieces on display. “Every year, it gets better, and it’s just, it just makes my heart so happy to see the development of these kids and the work that the teachers put in to make all this happen.”

An opening reception was March 4 at the Columbia County, Grovetown, and Harlem branch libraries, offering students, families, and community members an opportunity to support local student artists.

“I feel very proud of what I’ve accomplished,” said Riverside Middle School eighth grader, Chukwunonyerem “PJ” Igboeli, the sketch artist behind a drawing of a Nike tennis shoe. “I feel like it’s a good opportunity that everyone should have once in their lifetime.”

Ava Hayes, a Lakeside High School junior with artwork on display, said that she’s been doing art since she was little.

“I’ve just always drawn what’s in front of me,” she said.

“I love that there’s an environment for [this], where people can do their art,” she added.
