Children playing with a gun appear to be the reason one child was shot Wednesday.
On Thursday, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office released a redacted incident report in response to the shooting which ended up with one child being taken to the Augusta University Medical Center.
Deputies responded to the call but received differing accounts of what happened.
Three juveniles between the ages of 9 and 13 were in an apartment at East Augusta Commons, 420 East Boundary. One of them was playing with his mother’s hot pink SCCY handgun.
Deputy Justin LaCroix interviewed the child who was shot and reported that the three children were all in one bedroom when one of them pointed the gun at the floor, it went off and struck one of them in the leg.
Deputy Todd Beasley received a different story.
The child had been told not to play with his mother’s gun, the report said.
Beasley was told one of the other children “went to grab it out of his hand,” but the child would not release it, his finger was on the trigger and it went off striking the child in the leg.
The case is still active according to an email from Sgt. Kimberly Lee with the sheriff’s office.
