The first recorded car show was held in Chicago on March 23, 1901, according to Encyclopedia.com. Ever since then, car shows have evolved into multimillion-dollar events, showcasing machines that are mostly out of reach of the spectators.
Coffee and Cars is a different type of automotive show, because it isn’t really a show. It is more of a meet, with no trophies, no classes and no judgement. If you are an automotive enthusiast, you are welcome.
“It is literally just a gearhead gathering” comments Vince Mathis, who has organized these once a month shows for the past 9 years.
There is no telling what might show up at Coffee and Cars.

Gazing across the parking lot of the Augusta Municipal Building, I see everything from sleek supercars, hotrods overflowing with chrome, and even a Dodge Caravan sporting a jet engine protruding from the rear glass.
The sounds of choppy idles and music fill the air. The trailer parked on the curb has a line of patrons purchasing coffee and other goodies to enjoy as the crowds take in the displays. The car owners are from all ages and walks of life, but it still feels like a community of like-minded souls.
It is a very positive atmosphere and hard to find anywhere else.
The one stark difference between Coffee and Cars and a traditional car show is the lack of pressure to display a perfect, high dollar vehicle. Mathis thinks this is one of the things that makes events like his so popular.

“We welcome everybody. We have turned away stock cars, because we have been filling up this parking lot lately. All makes and models are welcome,” Mathis says.
There is no drama either, which is becoming problematic at many automotive gatherings. No one is blaring music, doing burnout, or causing problems. It is as family-friendly an event as any in Augusta.
They do hold the event from time to time at Carolina Dragway in Jackson, S.C., where event goers can even test their vehicles on the quarter mile safely and legally.
