The Munchies Lab, the fusion restaurant concept by the owners of Taqueria El Rey Mexican restaurant, is coming to Columbia County.

The eatery announced Dec. 2 on social media that it had just received the “go-ahead” from the county to set up shop, but did not reveal where. That initial post showed a scan of a Columbia County business license, issued Nov. 30.

Some elements of the license were covered up in the post, such as the physical location, only showing a “Suite 7” at an address in Martinez. The DBA for the business was listed as “Munchies” and another word, which was also covered.

Other Facebook posts leading up to that announcement included photos of the Munchies Lab food truck and what appeared to be the interior of a potential new location.

Munchies Lab first opened last year in a storefront on Walton Way in Augusta, across from the courthouse, serving fusion cuisine. It closed in September of this year amid decreased foot traffic and a need for more space, said co-owner Ramiro Galvan.

At the time, Galvan said he was already searching for alternative locales, including in Columbia County. The new location is looking toward opening in the second week of January. In the meantime, Galvan said, Munchies is being discreet with the details until announcing the address on Dec. 20.
