Hannah Winn had always considered Anna from Frozen as her favorite Disney princess until she was cast as Ariel in The Little Mermaid.

“I really like her determination to see the good in everything,” said the Lakeside High School student, who will bring the role to the stage with Musical Theatre Workshops May 13-15.

Based on the Disney animated movie, The Little Mermaid focuses on the young mermaid who wants to learn about life on land, makes a trade with an evil sea witch and falls in love.

Winn grew up with the Disney movie, and when she was about 6, had the Disney princess experience as Ariel at Disney World.

Unlike Winn, Jayden Watson, a North Augusta High School student who plays Sebastian, had never seen the movie until recently. That’s a good thing, he said. He wants to bring something different to playing the role.

“I feel that if I do what they did in the movie, you could just watch the movie instead of coming to the play,” he said.

Anyone familiar with Disney’s The Little Mermaid will recognize songs such as Under The Sea, which is Watson’s favorite, Part of Your World, Kiss The Girl and Poor Unfortunate Souls.” The stage version has additional songs.

Mickey Lubeck, the founder of Musical Theatre Workshops, is excited for the return to the stage. COVID-19 closed the curtain last season, although she was able to do some outdoor performances and bring Tuck Everlasting to the Fort Gordon Dinner Theater stage earlier this year.

The Little Mermaid will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hull Fine Arts Center at Augusta Preparatory Day School. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and are available at onwiththeshow.biz.

Lubeck will conduct her performing arts camps at Augusta Prep this summer, while her studio on Martinez Boulevard undergoes an expansion.

Lubeck said in the fall, she plans to increase her class load with the additional space.

Information on fall classes will be available at the website.
