NORTH AUGUSTA – The Augusta GreenJackets (21-20) were unable to stop the hot streak of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (30-11) on Wednesday night at SRP Park as the Birds shutout the GreenJackets for the first time with an 8-0 defeat for Augusta.

It was a pitcher’s duel to begin the night as AJ Smith-Shawver and Luis Devers gave up minimal baserunners through the first two innings but the Pelicans would get on the scoreboard in the third on a bases-clearing double by Kevin Alcantara with two outs making it 3-0 Myrtle Beach.

Augusta would try to fight their way back in the fourth inning by loading up the bases with one out, but Braulio Vasquez lined into a tough luck double-play back to the pitcher Luis Devers to abruptly end the threat.

That would ignite a momentum swing back to the Pelicans as Pete Crow-Armstrong upped the lead to 4-0 on an RBI single to make it 4-0, and for an exclamation point in the inning, Kevin Alcantara hit a two-run homer way out of the yard to double the Myrtle Beach lead to 6-0.

Two more runs would score in the seventh inning for the Pelicans on Alcantara’s sixth RBI of the night on a groundout, and a sacrifice fly by Kevin Madé to make it 8-0.

The GreenJackets offense was halted all night as Myrtle Beach would be the first team to shut out them this year in the 8-0 win for the Pelicans, clinching their tenth consecutive victory.

Luis Devers was the winner of Wednesday night’s game with AJ Smith-Shawver taking the loss.

Brandol Mezquita collected his 15th multi-hit game of the season while extending his on-base streak to 32 games with two singles as he finished as a notable offensive performer for the GreenJackets.

Augusta will look to get back into the series and snap the Pelicans’ current win streak on Thursday night with Kris Anglin set to take on Tyler Schlaffer for Myrtle Beach. First pitch for Game 3 comes at 7:05 pm from SRP Park.
