Naked Epicurean: Les Hydropathes

Date: April 01, 2022

Le Chat Noir, the black box theatre at the corner of 8th + Ellis, has been bringing unique experiences to Augusta since 2006. Known for bold, provocative, and unconventional on stage performances, Le Chat’s latest showstopper is Les Hydropathes, their recently revamped and remodeled lobby bar, bringing the same calibre of experience, with or without a show.

Much in the fashion of French salons, Les Hydropathes bar has the vibe of a cultural hub that caters to tipplers.

According to Zach McCabe, who was a consultant for the bar’s design and menu, designed the menu, Les Hydropathes was historically a lively 18th century group of artists who frequented cabarets such as Le Chat Noir in the bohemian Montmartre district of Paris. Les Hydropathes were known to enjoying their booze; thus, the name Les Hydropathes (loosely translated as “those with a distaste for water”) is a nod to those legendary revelers.

The focus of Les Hydropathes is classic cocktails. According to McCabe, “Our menu drinks span several decades from pre-prohibition to WWII, many with a Parisian nod. Our goal is to take classics from the now-obscure to the ubiquitous and make the best version we can.”

Local artists and fellow bacchanals are thereby summoned to embrace the “hydropathesca” tradition of love of drinks and live music in the off Broad Street theatre bar.

Come to be serenaded and enjoy top notch cocktails at Les Hydropathes, typically open beginning at 5 p.m Fridays + Saturdays, regardless of activity in the theatre.
