Amid the 2022 Summer Graduation ceremony for Columbia County high schoolers, the Columbia County Board of Education had a few shifts in personnel.
“We are so proud of each of these leaders, and we thank them for their dedication to education and the great work that they have done and will continue to do for the Columbia County School District,” said Superintendent Steven Flynt at the special called meeting held Thursday evening at Lakeside High School.
The Board of Education had neither a regular session nor a work study session scheduled this week. But this special meeting saw the approval and installation of local educators in new administrative roles.

After nine years as principal of Evans High School, Michael Johnson was appointed by the board to be the district’s new Director of Student Support. His replacement will be Martinez Elementary School principal Wade White; in turn, the new Martinez Elementary principal will be Angie Young.

Young has just finished two years as principal of Westmont Elementary School, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last month and for approximately the next two years will be totally renovated as its physical structure will be torn down and replaced with a new building.

Chris Hughes will be coming over to Columbia County from the Richmond County School System. He was appointed principal of Cross Creek High School in 2020, but will be the Columbia County School District’s Director of Athletics and School Activities.
The last role to fill is the principal of Greenbrier Middle School. Its current principal, Chip Fulmer, was appointed at Thursday’s meeting to be new principal of Greenbrier High School.
The meeting, which was public (though the board went into executive session first), was called to officially appoint faculty in the open administrative roles before teachers return to prepare for the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, Flynt noted. The Greenbrier Middle School principal position is expected to be filled soon, likely at the next school board meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, July 26.
