Recently, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) Business Services has assembled the Organizational Analytics team to strengthen data-drive management, performance and risk reduction of federal resources at the Savannah River Site (SRS).
According to the Considerations and Use of Data Analytics, a Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Inspector General (OIG) special report, companies can use data and analytics to review data in support of decision-making on policy, program operations, resource allocations, risk management, and mission outcomes.
“We must pioneer a standardized data governance structure, which is necessary to make critical decisions and gain visibility into the success of SRS programs,” said Bryan Ortner, SRNS director of organizational analytics. “To close gaps in the adoption and use of data analytics, representatives from SRNS OA, Information Technology, and Strategic Improvement, and Innovation aim to empower all SRS organizations to understand, validate, and securely control data while driving analytical innovation.”
SRNS Business Services introduced the first Data and Analytics Center of Excellence on June 19. This is a monthly forum that brings together SRNS professionals to learn and contribute to best practices, lessons learned, and advanced technologies.
SRNS Financial Systems Business Analyst Erin Brown demonstrated during the forum a data analytics tool, which was designed in Oracle Analytics Server (OAS), for filtering and tracking additional regular (AR) hours.
“This dashboard provides management with insights into employee’s AR time usage and the balance of earned versus taken AR hours,” said Brown. “This data can help eliminate biases in timekeeping, identify areas needing additional hires or rescoping, and suggest policy improvements.”
Ransom Baughman and Mike Alimpich from SRNS Site Services explained the Microsoft Power BI Maintenance Dashboard. This tool creates practical reports and work orders and produces filtered reports for performance tracking and forecasting.
“These conversations and demos will create a shared understanding of data security, ethics, and how we can leverage data to better manage our performance,” said Lance Waddell, SRNS senior vice president and director of business services on the importance of transforming data into useful insights and tools to boost performance. “Creating this cross-functional ‘A-team’ is key in this transition to data-driven decision making and was the first step in becoming a unified, seamless and scalable solution for SRS.”
