A new dog training business may be opening in Columbia County.

Late in August, Cody Turner submitted to the planning department a request to rezone his family’s property at 5585 White Oak Road in Appling from RA Residential Agricultural to S-1 Special zoning.

Turner intends to operate his upcoming dog training facility, called Kiokee Creek Kennels, from the six-acre residential location. Turner included his kennel license issued by the Georgia Dept. of Agriculture with his application, which shows the address as his base of operations.

The kennel is to operate from a shop that exists on the property, where “an average of 12 dogs” will be housed for obedience training, according to the rezoning request. Between training, feeding and allowing the dogs to play in a fenced open space north of the shop, the kennel would be in operation most days from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., though the application shows an estimate that actual client visits would average “less than one per day.”

Turner also noted that his long-term aim is to acquire another property on which he would eventually build his home and run his business.

Another local is proposing a liquor store in Grovetown, off of Columbia Road. Ashok Shah is requesting a revision to the planned unit development at 500 Oxbow Drive in Grovetown to allow for the establishment of a liquor store, to run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays.

The building at the address is the site of the Ivy Falls Shopping Center, where one suite is a location of Whipped Creamery dessert shop.

The structure also used to house another liquor store, Libations, Fine Wine & Spirits, which Shah’s letter of intention notes.

The Columbia County Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the dog training business in Appling in its Thursday, Sept. 21 meeting, and the Grovetown liquor store in its Oct. 5 meeting.
