Date: January 02, 2023

New Ellenton police have made an arrest in the Dec. 26 stabbing death of an Aiken man.

Ruben Perry, 27, was charged on New Year’s Day with murder in the slaying of 32-year-old Kennard Thomas. He is being held without bond in the Aiken County Detention Center.

In the hours after Christmas ended, the victim was stabbed at a home on the 500 block of Camel Street. Thomas died after being rushed to Augusta University Medical Center.

Perry is the same man who was charged in 2019 with attempted murder and weapon possession in a shooting at a New Ellenton laundromat along with 39-year-old Timothy Leroy Wright. Those charges appear to have been dismissed at a preliminary hearing, according to online records.

Perry also had a few drunk-driving charges on his record, including one where he was found with marijuana in Richmond County when he was a teenager.

A motive in the Dec. 26 stabbing death was not announced. The victim was a father of three. Funeral services for Thomas are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Creek Church in Aiken with interment at Southlawn Mausoleum and Cemetery.
