Beer lovers will soon have the chance to provide their input on a new brew.

Happy to Help is a new strawberry blonde ale that Savannah River Brewery will use to raise money for Paceline and the Georgia Cancer Center.

“It’s going to be refreshing and light,” said Adam Fulmer, the brewer.

While the initial flavor with a hint of strawberries has been developed, Fulmer said that beer lovers will have the chance to decide which type of yeast works best in completing the flavor.

Sample beers will be brewed. One will have a Belgian yeast; one an English yeast; and one an American yeast.

He said they should be ready for taste testing in about three weeks.

“They will all be on tap,” he said. “People can come in and tell us which one they like better.”

The idea for the beer has been brewing for about a year, according to Ian Mercier, president and chief executive officer for the Medical College of Georgia Foundation, who is a childhood friend of Fulmer’s.

According to a news release at the Paceline website, Paceline is a fundraising initiative. A Paceline bicycle ride weekend is the culmination of fundraising and awareness efforts. All of the money raised through Paceline goes directly to fund research at the Georgia Cancer Center.

The Medical College of Georgia Foundation’s mission is to support “the advancement of education, research and patient care at the Medical College of Georgia,” according to its website. The foundation supports the Paceline initiative.

The two friends decided to pull in a third childhood friend to complete the project.

Leonard “Porkchop” Zimmerman’s designed the packaging. Zimmerman lost his father in December to complications from surgery for a cancerous tumor. He’s designed other cans for Savannah River Brewing Co.

“It was all a good excuse for three friends to reconnect and share our hearts together for something important – putting an end to cancer,” said Mercier.

Fulmer estimates the final product will be available by August. He said that all of the profits from Strawberry Blonde will be donated to Paceline.
