Augusta University students and staff may finally get some relief from parking shortages that plague the downtown health sciences campus.

MCG Foundation through AU Jaguar Facilities Development LLC, is seeking the issue of $25 million in bonds to build a parking garage on university property located at 15th Street and Wrightsboro Road.

The bond issue, made through the Augusta Economic Development Authority, requires Augusta Commission approval and appears on the commission’s Tuesday agenda.

Other Augusta Commission items going for final approval Tuesday include:

• Approving a work session within 45 days to include the Asian-American Hotel Owners’ Association, Augusta Housing and Community Development, the Richmond County sheriff’s and marshal’s offices and Augusta Planning and Development to develop a plan to address “transient occupant confusion” or the hoteliers’ desire to remove non-paying customers.

• To approve holding a work session within 60 days on implementing a panhandling ordinance.

• To give final approval to Interim Administrator Takiyah Douse’s right-sizing plan for city government, and Mayor Garnett Johnson’s request for departments to model 5% and 10% budget cuts.

• To approve with conditions rescheduling rezoning applications for new Parker’s Kitchen convenience stores on Wheeler and Barton Chapel roads to Sept. 19.
