A new recreational center may be coming to south Augusta, according to a recent rezoning request.
A group called OPW Unlimited, based in Hephzibah, has petitioned for a special exception at its land on 4275 Old Waynesboro Road to build an “agricultural education and recreation site,” according to its letter of intent.
The proposed facility will offer outdoor adventure programs, complete with hiking, trail rides and lessons in horseback riding, animal training and equine management. The concept plan shows five phases of development, the first being an outdoor venue for rustic weddings and other events.
The second phase would entail space dedicated to sports and other activities, such as camping, archery, paintball and disc golf. The third phase, planning for which the narrative document notes is still ongoing, will have accommodations for overnight camping and retreats, such as tree houses and log cabins.
The fourth and fifth phases include more space for special events, including an amphitheater and a barn-like structure referred to as a “Barndominium.”
The narrative also included a mission statement underscoring the importance of recreation and the group’s aims to educate locals about nature, animals and outdoor life.
“Recreation is not just going on a long vacation after months of hard work, but should be part of our daily lives,” the document states. “Our recreation site would provide opportunities for the youth to see a different way of living and form a different perspective for their future.”
The subject parcel is some 80 acres, and is currently zoned R-1 One-family Residential. The Augusta Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the item during its June 3 meeting.
