Augusta has plans for a new pedestrian bridge, this one connecting the Augusta Canal trail to the Village at Riverwatch area.

Going for committee approval Tuesday is a state funding application for $500,000, to be added to Augusta’s overall state roads administration allocation.

The agenda item from Engineering and Environmental Services Director Hameed Malik says Georgia legislators spearheaded development of the bridge concept and secured $500,000 for it in the amended 2024 state budget.

The project would create connectivity with the canal trail from the River Watch side of the canal, it said. The 275-foot bridge would span the canal behind Bass Pro Shops at the Village at Riverwatch.

In addition, the project calls for a new trail running from the bridge around Warren Lake, which was dredged and restored over the last decade. Warren Lake covers about 11 acres from the outlet of Rock Creek running into the canal.

Accepting the state funds is the first step in the project, which Malik estimated would cost $2 million to complete.
