North Augusta City Council unanimously approved a revision to the city’s noise ordinance.

The new guidelines are only for Riverside Village and SRP Park.

The change extends the noise ordinance to 11:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Currently, loud music and amplified sound must stop by 10:30 p.m.

The revision also gives the city administrator and deputy administrator authority to grant special exemptions for events on other nights, like events at the new Sharon Jones Amphitheatre.

The exemption for SRP Park will allow sounds connected to GreenJackets games to go later in the event a game is running longer than usual.

Mayor Briton Williams said he signed the ordinance into law Monday night. The city administrator said it goes into effect immediately.

Also at the Monday night meeting, the council took the first step to build a new public safety headquarters and court operations facility on city-owned land on Georgia Avenue instead of the original location on East Buena Vista Avenue.

The Georgia Avenue location, also known as the Flythe and Seven Gables property, has lower costs, especially for site preparation.

Council voted to give Administrator Jim Clifford the authority to begin sketch plans that can be submitted to the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission will need to rezone the property.

Clifford said the plan envisions preserving two historic buildings on the site.

The city will seek input on the new plan from citizens, particularly property owners near the site, and non-profit groups interested in restoring and using the historic structures.
