New support group for lung cancer patients coming to Augusta

Date: May 16, 2025

A monthly educational group meeting for lung cancer patients is coming to Augusta next month.

LiveLung, a national nonprofit focused on lung cancer education, support and advocacy is launching this group on the second Tuesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. at The Kroc Center starting June 10.

Lung cancer survivor and LiveLung Founder Dusty Donaldson said that while lung cancer is the number one most deadly cancer and second most common, it’s not often talked about.

Importance of community

“Once someone gets lung cancer, they really need to be part of a community that is comprised on people who are on a similar journey…a lot of times, people feel kind of isolated,” she said.

Each meeting will offer educational presentations from expert speakers, including oncologists, nutritionists, and researchers, as well as the chance to connect with others who understand the challenges of living with lung cancer.

Dan Miller, M.D., professor of surgery and director of thoracic surgery at the Medical College of Georgia, will be joining the June 10 meeting to deliver an exclusive presentation on artificial intelligence’s potential for detecting lung cancer.

Donaldson said that one of the perks of the educational meetups is that patients and survivors can share hopeful news about treatments and research. “We love one another, we encourage one another,” she said.

“Anyone can get lung cancer, and no one deserves lung cancer,” she added. “Everyone deserves compassionate and equitable care.”

What to know if you go

Free lunch and parking are provided at every session.

Local lung cancer professionals are also invited to attend. Whether newly diagnosed, in treatment, or years into survivorship, lung cancer patients and their loved ones are welcome. Meetings will continue monthly and are always free of charge.Interested community members can RSVP online.
