Evans football will be the first Augusta-area team to get back to the gridiron in the Hurricane Helene aftermath when it hosts Effingham County on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

But on Tuesday afternoon, the Knights got a little pre-game inspiration from a former NFL star and current Colorado Buffaloes assistant coach.

Evans coach Barrett Davis posted a video via X (formerly Twitter) from NFL Hall-of-Famer, Warren Sapp.

The former Miami Hurricane and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star is on former fellow NFL Hall-of-Famer Deion Sanders’ Colorado coaching staff as the senior quality control analyst.

Sapp’s message was short and sweet, but meaningful to the team.

“Good morning, this is the QB Killer,” Sapp said on the video. “I have a message for the Evans Knights, Go Knights!”

Coach Davis said the connection between Sapp and Evans comes from one of the Knights’ players whose father knows Sapp personally. He was asked to give a message to the team, and Sapp obliged.

In his playing days, Sapp was known as the “QB Killer.” He played defensive tackle at University of Miami from 1992-1994.

He then was drafted with the 12th pick of the first round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he stayed for nine years before heading out to Oakland to play for the Raiders for four years.

Sapp retired on March 4, 2008 and five years later was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. In his 13-year NFL career, he registered 434 solo tackles and 96.5 quarterback sacks. He also forced 19 fumbles and snagged four interceptions.

Evans will host Effingham County Wednesday at 7 p.m. It’ll be the first game the Knights have played since facing Brunswick on Sept. 13.
