Jason Walter sees Augusta’s arts community as a rich yet sometimes compartmentalized population.

Several bands may play together, but it’s not often that artists from different fields come together for a single event. Walter plans to bring together a cross section of performers, visual artists and literary artists for “Standup Comedy, Poetry, Art, and Music @ The Dime” beginning at 9 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 7 at Pexcho’s Dime Museum, 216 Sixth St.

“I’m really excited about all of it,” he said.

Genres won’t be clumped together. Comedy, music and spoken word will be interspersed throughout the program. The artists will create their pieces while the other acts are performing.

“There will be a nice variety,” he said.

Among the acts are Jen Sparling.

“Jen is a poet and plays the ukulele. No one sounds like she does,” he said. “She’s unique and one of a kind. Her lyrics are just beautiful.”

Jacki Mayo, Jacob Boland, Joshua Smith, Boper9 Conklin, Clark DeLoach and Alex Ries will paint live.

Each of the artists has a distinct flavor with some leaning more toward an anime or comic book style feel to them, he said.

Dumb Jock Islands, a band comprised of Walter and two musicians from Charleston, S.C., will play a mix of original songs as well as some covers of alternative 90s music. The band, Prickly Heat, will also perform.

The event isn’t just for spectators. A couple of group art projects will take place as well. Walter is part of Augusta’s comic book and animation scene and hopes to draw in others from that field to work on a collaborative story. People will create individual panels that build a story together.

Other performers include Skyler Q. Andrews, Andrew Havok, Nitro the Infinite, Derek Berry and Rhonda Jones.

Walter said he hopes that people might take in a performance in an area that’s not their usual form of entertainment.

As for Walter, he plans on enjoying the night no matter what because it’s his birthday.

Tickets for the event are $15 and are available at simpletix.com.
