There were no fatalities reported following a collapse of the Old Vaucluse Road overpass on Saturday morning after two-vehicle wreck and subsequent fire.

According to a Facebook post by the GVW Fire Department, at approximately 4 a.m., GVW responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident with a vehicle fire. When firefighters arrived on scene, they discovered a tractor trailer carrying gasoline that was fully involved. Soon after authorities arrived, the Old Vaucluse Road overpass and bridge, which was already compromised, came down over the eastbound portion of I-20.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation said the bridge at mile marker 13 is a total loss following the incident. The contractor is on site to evaluate the situation and demolition of the bridge is underway.

“Crews will work through the night to remove the damaged structure. Once demolition is complete, SCDOT crews will begin installing new guardrails and repaving the interstate so we can safely reopen the roadway as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience as we work to get I-20 safely reopened,” SCOT said in a Facebook post.

While work on I-20 is done, detours have been set up, according to the SCDOT. Old Vaucluse Road is closed until further notice.
