A no parking zone is now in effect on Bellewood Drive.
The no parking zone will be in effect from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The resolution was first heard during the Public Works and Engineering Services Committee meeting Tuesday, March 28. Residents along the road created a petition for the no parking zone request.
According to the history on staff recommendation, vehicles are parking along Bellewood Drive and in the right of way when children are attending Augusta Cheer Academy, and doing this will stop residents from having access to their driveways.
At the March 28 meeting, committee member Doug Duncan asked if there was not parking at Cheer Academy and why were the parents parking in the street or residents’ driveways.
“We believe it’s because Cheer Academy’s parking is not sufficient,” said Kyle Titus, engineering services director.
Two residents of the road spoke at the March 28 meeting about their frustrations with the parking situation. Heatherly Fillgrove, is one of the property owners, and she stated when she asks people to move their vehicles, she is told to go through the loop at Augusta Cheer Academy.
“This is a very small road, and you cannot double park this road, not even single park it,” Fillgrove said. “I did a count of cars coming out of Augusta Cheer, and it was over 200 and something vehicles that circles through. They blocked the whole, when they do their circle thnig you cannot get to the bottom, my driveway, her driveway, people turn around in the driveways, headlights.”
Fillgrove also expressed concern about emergency vehicles, such as ambulances and fire trucks being able to get down the road.
The resolution states the no parking zone will be approximately 690 feet and requests the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office enforces the no parking zone. It also states the no parking zone would become effective upon approval by the commissioners.
