Both North Augusta boys and girls teams moved on to round two of the South Carolina High School League state tournament this week after each team picked up impressive first round wins at home.
The defending Class AAAA state champions notched a 71-33 win over Greenville Tuesday night. It happened behind a team-high 21 points from Kennedy Armistead, who knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the win. Armistead was helped by Celena Grant and Madison McCain who chipped in 19 and 14 points apiece while Messiah Williams added nine.
Kayla Gaston and Chloe Briggs led Greenville with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, in boys action, the Yellow Jackets ran past Berea 76-41 in first round action on Wednesday. It was a well-rounded scoring night for North Augusta as four players reached double figures with DaMario Saxon’s 14 points leading the way.
Jamison McKenzie and Daron Dunbar both contributed 12 points while Toian Nabriat added 10.
The North Augusta boys will move on to host a solid Lancaster squad (20-7) Saturday at 3 p.m. The Jackets will be tasked with slowing down high-scoring junior Jordan Watford who’s averaging over 20 points per contest. Meanwhile, the Lady Yellow Jackets will welcome Greer (11-10) to their home gym for a 6 p.m. tip off on Friday night.
Greer advanced by defeating the Lancaster girls 43-39 Tuesday, while the Lancaster boys punched their ticket to the second round by edging out Eastside 51-49 Wednesday night.
Staff photographer Rob Davis was on hand to capture shots of the action from both first round games.
