Tom Greene, who served 14 years on North Augusta City Council and 12 years as mayor, died Jan. 2 in Charlotte, N.C.

Mayor Briton Williams announced the news at the Jan. 3 council meeting.

“He was a man of vision. He had a vision; he was a dreamer; you saw the best in what this community could be,” said Williams. “He did not accept why something cannot be done. He wanted to figure out how to do it. He spearheaded the formation of North Augusta 2000 and he chaired that organization for its first 14 years.”

It was also Mayor Greene’s vision that led to the creation of one of the city’s most popular attractions, which was named in his honor, the North Augusta Greeneway.

“The recreational impact of the Greenway when we talk about quality of life for our citizens cannot be overstated. The Greenway has become a game changer for this community,” added Williams.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Posey Funeral Directors of North Augusta.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Jan. 6 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The funeral home is at 1307 Georgia Ave. The service will be Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of North Augusta at 602 Georgia Ave. Interment will follow at Pineview Memorial Gardens on West Five Notch Road.

During the meeting, council members selected an Arizona company to build and host a new website to highlight tourism in North Augusta. Madden Preprint Media, LLC is based in Tucson, Ariz.

Assistant Administrator Rachelle Moody said that after the site is built, the city will manage the site. She expects it to be up and running in the summer of 2022.

“It’s a best practice for a community to have a stand-alone tourism website to provide a broader range of community and event information,” she explained. “The site will highlight attractions in the city, current events and places for visitors to stay.”

The contract caps total project costs at $50,000. That will cover website design and development, the initial year of hosting and maintenance, brand development and designing a logo.

The money will come from funds in the Accommodations Tax Fund designated for advertising and promotion. Money for future years will be included in request submitted as part of the annual budgeting process.
