Rhett Sherman, Hammond Hill Elementary School K-2 reading interventionist, was named Aiken County Teacher of the Year at a banquet Thursday at the Aiken High School gym.

The North Augusta native received her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina Aiken and her master’s degree from Southern Wesleyan.

She spent 16 years teaching first grade at Hammond Hill before becoming the reading interventionist this year.

“Teaching is my craft. Giving a child the skills to become a more confident learner opens up a world that they would not have access to otherwise and is absolutely my greatest accomplishment in education. Being part of changing a child’s life for the better is why I became a teacher,” said Sherman in Thursday’s program.
