Few teams in the area have been as dominant in recent years as the North Augusta girls’ basketball team. The Lady Jackets won the state championship every year from 2017 to 2020. But their five-peat season was cut short Wednesday when North Myrtle Beach edged out a 32-29 upset win.

The Lady Jackets cruised to a 15-1 record through the regular season and glided past May River, of Bluffton S.C., 64-18 in the first round of the playoffs. Class 4A-Player-of-the-Year Kiana Lee recorded a double-double in that contest with 18 points and 10 boards, adding to the legacy of one of the CSRA’s best young athletes in recent years.

Lee averaged 22.2 points and 8.9 rebounds per game this season, and she moved past 1,000 career points during her senior year. However, her 10 points and nine rebounds against the North Myrtle Beach Chiefs (6-1) were not enough, and North Myrtle Beach moves on to the semifinals.

It was the end of a 20-game post-season winning streak for the Lady Jackets, whose record was 148-11 over the past six years.
